Chapter Sixteen

Keaton sat on Tim’s lap in Estelle’s kitchen. He laid his head against Tim’s shoulder and tried not to let the panic take over. He was reluctant to leave, but time ticked by. He had to meet the pig killer in thirty minutes.

He had a few problems. One being a very protective, clinging mate. Since he was just as clingy, it wasn’t a hardship in any other way besides him needing to leave soon and didn’t have a clue how to go about sneaking out.

Tim had packed an overnight bag, agreeing to stay at Estelle’s with Keaton. It was all fine and well, but Keaton wasn’t going to get away from Tim unless he sent him away. He could pick a fight but doing so seemed stupider than just slipping away. Tim hadn’t given him adequate enough reason to create an argument. Besides that, there were several Somersets in the room with them, including Ladon. Ladon would see right through Keaton’s bullshit and drag the truth out of him. Keaton couldn’t keep shit from him even if he wanted to, and he really didn’t. So that left Keaton ducking out.

Keaton sighed.

No way around it. He had to at least find out what they wanted. They were targeting Keaton, after all. Keaton’s name was on the paper.

If he made it back, what would he say to Tim? Gods, he’d be pissed and Keaton hated the thought of it.

“Why kill a pig? It’s weird.” Magnus leaned against the kitchen counter. He was an investigator and would sniff out the truth. The presence of the note wouldn’t stay a secret forever, not that he intended that. Keaton hoped to have more information. They couldn’t make a plan on how to catch the pig killer without knowing who did the deed and why.

While Keaton had a few suspicions, he didn’t have anything concrete and accusing a senator who hired someone else to do his dirty work wasn’t a good move. He had to risk it first.

Rocky met Keaton’s gaze. “Did you see anything?”

Keaton had answered the question a thousand times, including for the cops. He’d had as many opportunities to come clean about the note. Maybe he was making a mistake by not telling the others. Sticking to his lie would for sure bite him in the ass but he didn’t have a better solution. Suspicions weren’t facts. Since his name was on that note, he was the best one to find out what the hell was going on. No way would Tim let him go if he found out about the meeting.

“Someone did it. A piece of that person was left back at the barn somewhere. We just have to find it.” Rocky was the smartest guy in the room when it came to reading people and he was super suspicious of Keaton.

Keaton glanced away, not wanting Rocky to see the truth in his gaze. He was good at faking it. He’d perfected the art. But he’d never been around so many paranormals who were stronger than him.
